Leaving Japan

Leaving Japan

Almost exactly three months ago I set off from Singapore for another step into the unknown about to embark on three months living and working in Tokyo. My time in Singapore had been quite tough and by the end I was looking forward to leaving in the hope that the Tokyo leg of my trip at the very least couldn’t be much worse than the Singapore one.

桜 – Cherry blossom

桜 – Cherry blossom

One of the things I was most excited about when I found out I would be spending three months in Japan was knowing that my visit would overlap with cherry blossom season. As one of my colleagues put it being here from February to the end of April meant I would be experiencing the most miserable and the most beautiful seasons in Tokyo. I had seen lots of beautiful pictures of cherry blossom in Japan but I definitely didn’t have an understanding that it was so important or popular here and why that is the case.

Family holiday part 2

Family holiday part 2

It seemed cruel to expect people to read around 4000 words of my waffling all in one go so I split this into two parts. Part one covers trips to Asakusa, Shinjuku Gyoen and Kamakura. Family holiday part 1

Family holiday part 1

I left the UK on the 3rd November and having spent Christmas in Australia with some lovely friends rather than returning home I hadn’t seen any of my family for 3 and a half months up to the middle of Feb. On the morning of the 18th Feb when my parents and aunt were winging their way to Tokyo I awoke at about 0430 literally too excited to sleep! Not only was it lovely to be reunited with some of my family it was also a great opportunity for me to do some sightseeing with some company after my solitary travels over the past few months. I took a week off work in order to spend some time exploring Tokyo and the surrounding area. This is probably going to be a mammoth post so take a comfort break, stick the kettle on, make a brew and then settle down to read it…

New surroundings

New surroundings

I’ve been in Tokyo for two whole weeks now so it’s high time I scribbled some things down about my new location. Somewhat strangely I’d never even remotely considered visiting Japan so it’s somewhat surprising to find myself living here for three months and an even more pleasant surprise to find 日本が大好きです(well Tokyo at least and I’m very eager to explore more of the country).

My new place is in the 六本木 area of the city which is a place usually synonymous with wild partying and drunken antics so I’ve had a few pained looks from people here when I’ve told them where I’m living. As you’re about to see if this is party central it’s certainly not in evidence from my little neighbourhood. As a word of warning for those of a sensitive disposition there will be some toilet related elements to this post – look away now to avoid being offended!
